Targeted therapy for lung cancer uses medicines selected for particular features of the tumour, most often in non-small cell lung cancer. Tests may identify changes in genes such as EGFR or ALK that make a specific treatment relevant. The exact alteration, cancer stage and previous therapy matter; the name of a gene alone is not enough to choose a drug. Treatment can involve tablets, injections or infusions, sometimes in combination with other medicines.
Patients consider care abroad to review molecular results with a lung cancer team, clarify treatment options or explore a suitable clinical trial. A specialist opinion should also consider disease outside the chest, including brain metastases when present, and the need for local treatment. Before travelling, arrange continued medicine supply, monitoring and urgent support at home. Expected benefit, side effects and treatment duration differ between patients, and finding a molecular target does not guarantee lasting disease control.

Targeted drugs are important for selected non-small cell lung cancers. Molecular changes such as EGFR mutations or ALK and ROS1 rearrangements may guide treatment; other actionable alterations also exist. The exact variant and evidence for a particular drug matter. Treatment may be used for advanced disease or in selected earlier-stage situations. It does not automatically replace surgery or radiation when these are indicated.
The team reviews pathology, tumour tissue and available molecular results. A blood-based liquid biopsy can sometimes help, but a negative result may require tissue testing. Scans assess disease extent, and brain imaging is used when appropriate. PD-L1 testing mainly informs immunotherapy decisions and does not replace testing for relevant driver alterations. Smoking history cannot reliably determine whether a target is present.
Bring original reports, scans and records of previous medicines. Blood counts, liver and kidney function and, for some drugs, heart tests establish a baseline. Describe current breathing symptoms, other medicines, supplements and pregnancy or fertility concerns.
Oral medicines follow specific instructions for dosing, food and missed tablets; other drugs require scheduled injections or infusions. Some regimens include chemotherapy. Follow-up combines symptom review, blood tests and imaging. When brain metastases are present, the choice of systemic medicine and any separate local treatment need coordinated assessment. Dose changes or interruptions should be directed by the team.
Depending on the drug, adverse effects include rash, diarrhoea, nail problems, fatigue, swelling and abnormal liver tests. Some medicines can cause lung inflammation or heart problems. New or worsening breathlessness, fever, chest pain, severe diarrhoea or an infusion reaction needs prompt assessment; symptoms should not automatically be attributed to the cancer.
Resistance can develop. Progression may prompt repeat tissue or blood testing, a change of drug, combination treatment or another approach. Monitoring is required even when symptoms improve.
Ask an oncology team to clarify the treatment goal, local drug availability and responsibility for monitoring after travel. Costs include pathology review, molecular tests, scans, medicines, administration and repeated visits. Plan for continued treatment and potential complications.
No. Molecular testing and the cancer subtype determine available options.
No. Different alterations may require different medicines or combinations.
No. Changes require medical review of response, toxicity and the planned course.
