Core biopsy removes small cylinders of tissue through a hollow needle for examination in a pathology laboratory. Doctors may recommend it when a lump, an abnormal scan or another finding needs clarification. Unlike a needle aspiration that mainly collects cells, a core sample retains tissue structure, which can help identify the nature of an abnormality and guide treatment. The target may be superficial or within an organ, so the technique and aftercare depend on the site.
Assessment abroad may be considered when a difficult diagnosis requires specialist imaging, tissue sampling or pathology review. Ask whether existing samples could be reviewed before arranging another procedure. A core biopsy is a diagnostic step, rather than an operation to remove the whole abnormality. The treating team selects the method, explains its risks and plans how the result will be discussed. Sometimes the sample is inconclusive and further investigation is necessary.

A core biopsy can help distinguish benign changes from cancer and investigate other tissue abnormalities. The pathologist examines the sample’s cells and structure; additional laboratory tests may be appropriate for a particular question. Findings must be considered alongside the examination and scans. Sampling one area does not automatically describe the whole lesion.
The team identifies the target and chooses a suitable route. Ultrasound or CT may guide the needle; other imaging techniques are used for selected sites. Send earlier reports and images before travel. When cancer is suspected, coordinate sampling and interpretation with the oncology team.
Tell staff about medicines affecting blood clotting, allergies, possible pregnancy and previous bleeding problems. Blood tests may be requested. Follow the specific instructions about eating, drinking and medication, including any plan for anticoagulants. Do not stop them yourself. If sedation is planned, confirm fasting requirements, an escort and restrictions after discharge.
The skin is cleaned and local anaesthetic is commonly used. Through a small skin opening, the clinician positions the needle and collects tissue, sometimes taking several cores. You may feel pressure or hear a clicking sound from the device. Tell the team about pain or discomfort so they can respond.
The procedure and observation time vary with the body area, guidance method and anaesthesia. A superficial biopsy may involve a shorter visit than a deep organ biopsy. Ask for the expected appointment duration and whether overnight observation could be necessary. Follow the written advice for the dressing, activity and travel.
Possible complications include bruising, pain, bleeding and infection. A lung biopsy can also cause a pneumothorax, or air around the lung. Heavy bleeding, breathlessness or fainting require urgent assessment; worsening pain, fever or wound redness should be reported promptly.
Results require laboratory processing and may take longer when additional tests are needed. Agree who will explain them and request the report for follow-up at home. Cost depends on the target, imaging guidance, anaesthesia, observation and pathology work.
No. A biopsy investigates an abnormality and may identify a non-cancerous cause.
Yes. An insufficient or unrepresentative sample may require further sampling or another investigation.
Usually it collects diagnostic samples. Treatment of the remaining abnormality is a separate decision.
