PET/MRI combines positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in one examination. PET records the distribution of an injected radiotracer, while MRI produces detailed tissue images. The MRI component does not use ionising radiation, but the PET component involves radiation exposure. The combined examination is therefore not radiation-free. A doctor selects it for a specific question, such as assessing selected cancers or certain neurological conditions. PET/MRI is not universally superior to PET/CT, a targeted MRI or other investigations.
The tracer and MRI protocol are selected for the indication; FDG is not used in every examination, and MRI contrast is not automatic. Before booking, provide the referral, earlier images and treatment history, and disclose implants, pregnancy, breastfeeding and kidney disease. Confirm food and medicine instructions for your particular protocol. When comparing offers, check scan coverage, the tracer and whether contrast, a report and consultation are included. Cost, visit duration and report turnaround depend on the programme and should each be confirmed with the clinic.

The examination combines information about tracer distribution with tissue structure. In oncology, it may help assess selected disease extent or treatment response when PET and MRI together address the clinical question. Specialist centres also use protocols for certain brain disorders. The choice depends on the diagnosis, anatomical area and available tracer. Our oncology section provides related information.
PET/MRI is not always more informative than other tests. The doctor considers its value alongside PET/CT, targeted MRI and alternatives. FDG reflects glucose-related processes; other tracers target different biological features. The examination name alone does not specify the tracer, coverage or MRI sequences. Ask the clinic to confirm that the proposed programme matches your referral before arranging travel.
The PET radiotracer and gadolinium-based MRI contrast are different substances. Contrast is used when needed. If planned, the specialist considers previous reactions and kidney function. Our MRI guide explains the magnetic resonance component.
For an implanted device, provide the exact model and safety documents. MRI eligibility depends on its labelling and scanning conditions: having an implant is not automatically a prohibition. Disclose metallic foreign bodies, surgery and relevant medical conditions. Discuss claustrophobia or difficulty lying still beforehand. Hearing protection is used during MRI; sedation, if needed, requires separate preparation.
Food, activity and medicine instructions depend on the tracer. Blood glucose matters for FDG, so people with diabetes need individual instructions from the department. Disclose pregnancy or breastfeeding before booking: the team will assess suitability and aftercare. PET creates radiation exposure even without CT. Advice about close contact with children and pregnant people depends on the radiotracer.
With FDG, inflammation and infection may cause increased uptake. Findings are assessed with symptoms, earlier studies and other information; a biopsy may sometimes be needed. PET/MRI does not guarantee detection of every disease.
The visit includes preparation, tracer uptake and scanning. Report turnaround is separate. Request a written quote and arrangements for follow-up advice, especially if travelling from another city or country.
Yes, from the PET tracer. MRI does not use ionising radiation.
No. Its need is assessed separately from the PET tracer choice.
Not always. A doctor reviews the images alongside clinical information and decides whether further investigations are needed.
