Breast tomosynthesis, also called digital breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography, uses low-dose X-rays taken from different angles. A computer reconstructs the images into layers, helping the radiologist examine tissue that may overlap on conventional mammography. It can be used in breast screening or diagnostic assessment when appropriate. The examination involves breast compression and ionizing radiation; it is not an MRI scan and does not guarantee that every cancer will be detected.
The choice of examination depends on symptoms, previous findings, breast density, personal risk and applicable screening guidance. Before booking, explain whether you need routine screening or assessment of a new change, and provide previous breast images and reports. Confirm whether the quoted service includes tomosynthesis, other mammographic views, ultrasound or a consultation. These are distinct services that may be recommended separately. Ask the clinic about preparation, accessibility, report delivery and the plan for discussing any findings that require further assessment.

During tomosynthesis, the X-ray tube moves through an arc while the breast is compressed. Images from different angles are reconstructed into thin layers. This reduces the effect of overlapping tissue and can help clarify an area of concern. A protocol may include synthesized two-dimensional images or additional conventional views. The radiation exposure depends on the equipment and combination of images used.
Screening aims to identify breast cancer before symptoms develop. Diagnostic imaging investigates a lump, nipple discharge, another breast change or an earlier abnormal result. Tomosynthesis may contribute to either pathway, but the appropriate starting age, interval and additional tests depend on national guidance and individual risk. People with a strong family history or a known inherited predisposition may need a different surveillance plan.
A new lump or persistent change should be discussed with a clinician even after a recent normal mammogram. Do not wait for a routine screening invitation to report symptoms.
Send earlier mammograms and reports so that the radiologist can compare changes over time. Tell the clinic about previous surgery, breast implants, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and any current symptoms. Explain mobility limitations or previous difficulty with positioning when arranging the appointment.
You will need to uncover the upper body. Follow the department's advice about deodorant, powders and lotions on the breasts or underarms, as these can affect the images. Compression helps hold the breast still and obtain useful images, but it can feel uncomfortable or painful. Tell the mammographer if you need support or a pause.
Tomosynthesis can improve visibility of some abnormalities, but false-negative and false-positive findings remain possible. Dense tissue and other factors can affect interpretation. An abnormal result may lead to extra views, targeted ultrasound or, when indicated, biopsy. Imaging alone cannot always determine whether a finding is cancer.
Review the related mammography and ultrasound examination when discussing the recommended assessment. Ask which elements are included in your quotation and which require a separate booking. Confirm access to images, the report language and who will explain the result. Report preparation is separate from the time spent acquiring images.
No. Ultrasound, MRI or biopsy may still be needed for a particular clinical question.
No. Compression remains part of tomosynthesis. Discuss discomfort or positioning concerns with the mammographer.
No test detects every cancer. Seek clinical assessment of a new or persistent breast change regardless of the screening result.
