A fibroadenoma is a benign, solid breast lump made of glandular and connective tissue. It often feels smooth and mobile, but touch alone cannot establish the diagnosis. A new lump, a change in a previously assessed lump, nipple changes or unusual discharge should be checked by a clinician. Assessment considers your symptoms, examination, breast imaging and, when appropriate, a tissue sample. A confirmed fibroadenoma does not automatically require surgery or cancer treatment.
A breast specialist can explain whether the findings agree sufficiently to support reassurance, observation or removal. The decision takes account of growth, discomfort, size, uncertainty and your preferences. For a consultation abroad or a second opinion, prepare previous ultrasound or mammography images, reports and any biopsy results. Record when the lump appeared and what has changed. Agree how results will be communicated and who will arrange any further care after you return home.

Assessment may include ultrasound, mammography or a core needle biopsy. The choice depends on age, examination findings and clinical circumstances; everyone does not need the same tests. Ultrasound helps distinguish solid tissue from a fluid-filled cyst. When tissue is sampled, a pathologist examines it and the team checks whether the result explains the imaging and examination findings.
A report describing a fibroepithelial lesion may require further clarification. A phyllodes tumour is a different diagnosis that can resemble a fibroadenoma and may require surgical excision. Do not interpret these terms as interchangeable. Adolescents with a large or growing lump need assessment that also considers the developing breast.
Many correctly diagnosed fibroadenomas can remain in place. Some stay unchanged or become smaller. If biopsy findings confirm a fibroadenoma without atypia and agree with the other findings, additional imaging follow-up may not be necessary; routine screening and any separate risk assessment remain relevant. Other situations need scheduled reassessment. Ask for a written plan rather than assuming repeated scans are always required.
Removal may be discussed for substantial growth, symptoms, a large lump, diagnostic uncertainty or an informed patient preference. Before consenting, discuss the proposed procedure, anaesthesia, scarring, possible changes in breast shape or sensation and recovery arrangements. Removing one fibroadenoma does not prevent another lump from developing.
A consultation within breast care can address benign findings as well as suspicious changes. Send original imaging where available, dated measurements and the complete pathology report. Tell the team about pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous breast procedures, medicines and relevant family history. Ask whether pathology review or further sampling is needed before booking an intervention. Confirm the consultation facility, consent arrangements, itemised estimate and responsibility for communicating outstanding results.
No. A fibroadenoma is benign. Simple fibroadenomas generally do not increase breast cancer risk; complex findings or other tissue changes may affect an individual risk assessment.
No. The clinician decides whether imaging and examination are sufficient or whether tissue is needed to clarify the finding.
No. A confirmed, reassuring finding can often be left in place. Reasons for removal should be explained in relation to your own results.
Arrange another assessment for growth or a new breast change, even after a previous benign result. Do not postpone local evaluation while planning travel.
