Kidney cancer includes several diseases. In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common type and arises in kidney tissue. Urothelial cancer of the renal pelvis starts in the urine-collecting lining and follows a different treatment pathway. Childhood kidney tumours also need specialist assessment. A mass found on a scan is not automatically cancer; some kidney lesions are benign, and further evaluation helps clarify the finding.
Assessment may involve reviewing imaging, checking kidney function and selecting additional investigations. A needle biopsy is useful in some situations but is not required before every kidney operation. Treatment decisions consider the suspected or confirmed tumour type, size, location, spread, kidney function and general health. Options can include surgery, monitoring, ablation or systemic treatment in selected circumstances. For a consultation, bring scan images, reports and any tissue results. Ask about preserving kidney function, treatment alternatives, possible complications and who will coordinate follow-up.

A kidney lesion may be discovered during imaging for another reason or after symptoms such as blood in urine or persistent side pain. Symptoms alone do not establish cancer. Imaging helps distinguish solid masses from cystic findings and assess their features. Renal cell carcinoma and urothelial cancer of the renal pelvis require different diagnostic and treatment discussions.
CT or MRI may help assess the mass, nearby structures and possible spread. The team also checks kidney function and other relevant test results. Contrast use and the choice of imaging need to take account of individual circumstances. Additional scans are selected for the clinical question; every patient does not need every staging test.
A renal mass biopsy may clarify an uncertain finding or guide a planned ablation, monitoring strategy or systemic treatment. It is not automatically necessary when surgery would be recommended regardless of its result. Ask what the biopsy could change and what will happen if the sample is inconclusive.
A team involving urology and oncology considers the tumour and the person together. Surgery may remove the tumour while preserving part of the kidney, or remove the whole kidney when appropriate. The choice depends on location, extent, technical feasibility and function; a robotic approach does not by itself guarantee a better result.
Selected small renal masses may be managed with active surveillance or local ablation. Surveillance involves planned reassessment and discussion of changes that could trigger treatment. Advanced renal cell carcinoma may require immunotherapy, targeted medicines or combinations selected for the disease setting. Treatment for renal pelvis urothelial cancer must follow its own pathway rather than simply adopting a renal cell cancer plan.
Follow-up addresses recurrence risk, treatment effects and kidney health. Monitoring may include imaging, blood or urine tests and blood pressure assessment. Ask who will review results and whether specialist kidney care is needed. Bring treatment summaries when moving between teams. New visible blood in urine should receive prompt medical assessment.
No. Benign masses and cysts occur. The imaging findings and clinical context guide further assessment.
No. Its value depends on whether the result can influence care. Discuss the reason for recommending or omitting it.
Sometimes. Ask whether partial nephrectomy is suitable and how each option may affect kidney function.
No. Active surveillance requires an agreed review plan and criteria for reconsidering treatment.
