Nasopharyngeal cancer develops in the upper part of the throat behind the nose. It differs from cancers of the mouth, larynx and other nearby sites. Assessment establishes the tissue diagnosis, local extent and whether lymph nodes or distant organs are involved. A persistent neck lump, one-sided nasal blockage or hearing changes can have other causes, but should be medically assessed. Symptoms or an Epstein–Barr virus test alone do not confirm cancer.
For a consultation abroad, prepare the endoscopy and pathology reports, original imaging, previous treatment records and current medicines. Include hearing, swallowing, dental and nutritional concerns. The specialist team may use EBV-related findings as part of the clinical picture, rather than as a stand-alone diagnosis. Treatment often involves radiotherapy, with chemotherapy or other systemic treatment in selected situations. Ask for a written plan explaining the indication, sequence, side effects and supportive care. Confirm which records need review and how monitoring will continue after returning home.

An ear, nose and throat specialist can examine the nasopharynx with an endoscope. A biopsy provides tissue for pathology to identify the tumour. The exact site and histological findings matter because cancers in neighbouring areas follow different pathways. A neck lump does not by itself identify where a tumour began.
Persistent nasal, ear or neck symptoms need assessment rather than self-diagnosis. Seek prompt local care if symptoms worsen significantly or eating, drinking or breathing becomes difficult. An overseas appointment should not delay necessary investigation or symptom treatment.
Imaging assesses the primary site, neck nodes and possible spread. MRI can help evaluate nearby structures, including the skull base; CT or PET-CT may answer other staging questions. The team chooses examinations according to the clinical findings rather than requiring every available scan.
Some nasopharyngeal cancers are associated with Epstein–Barr virus, or EBV. Pathology-related testing and plasma EBV DNA can contribute to assessment and monitoring in appropriate cases. These results need specialist interpretation alongside biopsy and imaging. EBV infection is common, so evidence of previous infection is not itself a cancer diagnosis. Ask which test was performed and what it means in your situation.
The multidisciplinary oncology team considers stage, tumour features, health and previous treatment. Radiotherapy is central in many treatment plans, sometimes combined with chemotherapy. Surgery has a more selective role than in some other head and neck cancers. Recurrent or metastatic disease may require a different systemic or local approach.
Discuss dental assessment, mouth care, hearing evaluation, swallowing support and nutrition before treatment. Radiation and systemic medicines can cause short-term and lasting effects, so follow-up includes both tumour control and function. Before travel, clarify the treatment schedule, accommodation needs, emergency contact and included services. Obtain written instructions and arrange who will review symptoms and results at home.
No. EBV infection is common. Different tests have different meanings, and a cancer diagnosis requires the full specialist assessment.
Not necessarily. Radiotherapy, with or without systemic treatment, is commonly used. The team should explain whether surgery has a role in your case.
The disease and treatment can affect these functions. Early assessment helps plan support and recognise changes during follow-up.
Provide original scans, endoscopy and pathology reports, previous treatment details and any EBV results, including the test type. Ask whether tissue materials or additional records are needed.
