A neurofibroma is a usually benign tumor involving the tissue around a peripheral nerve. It may appear as a soft lump in or beneath the skin, or develop deeper in the body. Some cause no symptoms; others produce pain, tingling, weakness or difficulties related to pressure on nearby structures. A single neurofibroma can occur without an inherited condition. Multiple tumors or a plexiform neurofibroma may prompt assessment for neurofibromatosis type 1, but the tumor and the syndrome are different diagnoses.
Care depends on the type, location, growth and effect on nerve function. Observation may be appropriate for a stable, symptom-free lesion, while surgery or other specialist treatment may be considered when it causes problems. For a second opinion, provide previous imaging, pathology if available and a description of any change in symptoms. Ask the team to explain both the aim of treatment and the possible effect on the involved nerve.

Cutaneous neurofibromas involve the skin; other tumors lie beneath it or along deeper nerves. Plexiform neurofibromas involve multiple nerve branches and are strongly associated with NF1. A clinician reviews the lump, neurological function, personal history and any features suggesting a genetic syndrome.
MRI can help define a deep tumor's relationship to nerves and surrounding tissues. Not every small skin lesion needs imaging. If the diagnosis is uncertain or malignant change is suspected, the specialist decides whether additional imaging or a carefully planned biopsy is necessary. Bring earlier scans for comparison, not just their written reports.
A small, stable neurofibroma that causes no problems may be monitored. Surgery can be considered for pain, functional difficulty, repeated irritation or a significant effect on appearance. Because a tumor may be intertwined with the nerve, the consultation should address possible weakness, altered sensation and the balance between complete removal and preserving function.
Selected patients with symptomatic NF1-associated plexiform neurofibromas that cannot be completely removed safely may be eligible for a MEK inhibitor. This is specialist treatment with monitoring requirements; it is not a general medicine for every skin neurofibroma. Eligibility and availability depend on the individual situation and applicable authorization.
Rapid growth, new persistent or night-time pain, a hard area within a previously soft tumor, or new weakness or numbness warrant prompt medical review. These signs do not prove cancer, but can require investigation for a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, particularly in NF1-associated plexiform lesions.
When arranging care, ask which specialist will review imaging and whether a peripheral nerve or NF team should participate. Obtain the proposed monitoring schedule, surgical or medication risks, rehabilitation needs and a written estimate. Clarify who will manage wound checks and ongoing reviews near home.
No. A solitary tumor can occur independently. NF1 assessment considers other clinical findings, family history and genetic testing when appropriate.
No. Neurofibromas are generally benign. Malignant transformation is a particular concern in some deeper or plexiform lesions, not an inevitable outcome.
No. The reason for intervention should be clear. Monitoring may be preferable when symptoms are absent or surgery would put nerve function at risk.
Removing one lesion does not treat an underlying NF1 syndrome or prevent other neurofibromas. Follow-up is tailored to the diagnosis.
