Ovarian cancer is a group of diseases rather than a single tumour type. Epithelial cancers are the most common and are often considered together with fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers. Germ cell and stromal tumours are less common and may need different treatment. Persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, feeling full quickly or changes in urinary frequency should be assessed, although these symptoms also occur with many non-cancerous conditions.
Assessment combines clinical history, examination, appropriate imaging and tissue diagnosis. Blood markers such as CA-125 can contribute information but cannot establish cancer on their own. A specialist team considers the exact pathology, stage, general health and personal priorities before choosing surgery, chemotherapy or other treatment. Genetic and tumour testing may influence care and identify inherited risk in the appropriate setting. Bring previous scans and pathology reports to a consultation, and discuss fertility, menopause, possible treatment effects and the plan for continuing support.

Epithelial ovarian cancer includes several subtypes. Related fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers often follow similar treatment principles. Germ cell and stromal tumours have different biological features and may need another approach. An ovarian cyst or mass is not automatically malignant; identifying the pathology is important before applying a cancer treatment plan.
Persistent or frequent bloating, pelvic pain, early fullness or urinary changes should be discussed with a clinician. New or worsening symptoms should not be dismissed solely as a digestive problem. Examination, ultrasound, blood tests and selected further imaging help assess the finding and plan the next step.
CA-125 may be raised in ovarian cancer or in benign conditions, and a normal result does not exclude every cancer. A tissue sample obtained through an appropriately planned procedure establishes the diagnosis. The specialist decides how tissue should be collected and whether further tests are needed before treatment. Routine screening of people at average risk is a separate question and is not equivalent to investigating symptoms.
A gynaecological oncology team considers the tumour subtype, extent, likelihood of successful surgery and the person's fitness. For epithelial disease, surgery and chemotherapy are often combined. Some patients have surgery first; others receive chemotherapy before a later operation. Targeted or maintenance treatment is suitable only in particular settings, based on tumour features, response and other eligibility factors.
Germ cell tumours may use different surgical and drug strategies, with fertility preservation considered when appropriate. Recurrent disease needs reassessment of previous treatment, current findings and goals. A technique or drug name alone cannot establish the best option or predict an individual's outcome.
People diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer should be offered inherited-risk testing, including relevant BRCA and other susceptibility genes, even without a family history. Tumour testing asks a different question and may help select therapy. Genetic counselling helps explain implications for relatives and the limits of results.
Discuss fertility before treatment, along with menopause symptoms, sexual health, nutrition and emotional support. Agree a follow-up plan and a contact for new symptoms. Keep copies of pathology, genetic results and treatment summaries.
No. It must be interpreted with symptoms, imaging and other findings; benign conditions can also raise it.
No. Pathology, extent, health and treatment goals influence both the procedure and its timing.
No. Epithelial ovarian cancer can justify genetic testing regardless of known family history.
Sometimes, depending on tumour type and extent. Discuss specialist advice before treatment; preservation is not suitable for every case.
