Pancreatic cancer assessment establishes the tumour type, its extent and whether an operation could remove it. The common ductal adenocarcinoma differs from pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, which require a separate treatment pathway. Decisions also consider general health, symptoms and nutritional status. Imaging, pathology where indicated and other results are reviewed together; a blood tumour marker alone cannot confirm or exclude the diagnosis.
For a consultation abroad, prepare original scans, reports, any biopsy results and details of previous treatment. Include weight changes, jaundice, digestion problems, diabetes, current medicines and family history. Ask the team to explain resectability, the proposed sequence of treatment and whether genetic counselling or tumour testing could inform care. Surgery, chemotherapy and selected other therapies have different roles. Symptom relief, pancreatic enzyme treatment when needed and nutrition support are part of the plan. Request a written opinion and continuing-care arrangements before making travel commitments.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma arises in the exocrine pancreas. Neuroendocrine tumours arise from hormone-producing cells and differ in biology and treatment. The diagnosis should identify the type rather than treat every pancreatic mass as the same disease. Symptoms such as weight loss, abdominal or back pain and jaundice can also have other causes.
Assessment may include dedicated CT, MRI or endoscopic ultrasound, with tissue sampling selected by the team. Original images help a specialist review findings beyond the written report. CA 19-9 can be useful in context but may be raised in noncancerous conditions and is not produced by everyone; it is not a stand-alone cancer test.
Alongside stage, the team may describe the tumour as resectable, borderline resectable or unresectable. This reflects its relationship to nearby structures and whether complete removal is feasible. Locally advanced disease and distant metastases require different considerations. Fitness for major surgery is assessed separately from the technical possibility of removing the tumour.
A multidisciplinary oncology team decides whether surgery, treatment before surgery, postoperative treatment or nonsurgical care is appropriate. Chemotherapy is important in many pathways; radiotherapy and other systemic medicines are selected for particular situations. Ask about genetic counselling, inherited-risk testing and tumour profiling, which have different purposes. A relevant biomarker may identify an option but does not guarantee benefit.
Supportive care should address pain, nausea, weight loss, digestion and blood glucose where needed. A dietitian can assess nutritional problems, and pancreatic enzyme replacement may help when food is not being digested properly. A stent or bypass can relieve bile-duct or digestive obstruction in selected patients; symptom relief is different from removing the cancer.
Coordination with gastroenterology may be needed for drainage or digestive care. New jaundice or significant deterioration needs prompt local assessment. Before travel, clarify immediate treatment needs, required records, pathology review, the proposed goal and the services included in the estimate. Organise medicine access, monitoring and a clinician at home to receive the final plan.
No. Neuroendocrine and other tumours differ. The exact diagnosis determines the relevant treatment pathway.
No. Imaging, overall health and specialist review inform the decision, and new findings can change the plan.
No. The result must be interpreted with the clinical assessment and imaging; some patients do not produce this marker.
No. Digestion and weight problems should be assessed during planning and treatment. Ask who will monitor symptoms, enzyme needs and nutritional intake.
