Melanoma is a cancer of melanocytes, the cells that make pigment. Skin melanoma is one type of skin cancer, distinct from basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. It may develop in an existing mole or as a new lesion, and not every melanoma is dark. A changing spot, an unusual growth or a lesion that bleeds should be assessed promptly. Its appearance or a photograph cannot establish the diagnosis.
A skin biopsy provides tissue for microscopic examination and information that guides further assessment. The treatment plan depends on tumor thickness and other pathological features, lymph node involvement, any spread and the person's health. When seeking a second opinion, bring the pathology report, procedure records and available imaging. Ask whether the original tissue needs review and which staging tests are appropriate before choosing treatment. A clearly documented diagnosis is more useful than selecting a procedure from its name alone.

A dermatologist examines the suspicious lesion and the rest of the skin, often using dermoscopy. When melanoma is suspected, an appropriately planned biopsy is needed; this commonly involves removing the lesion for laboratory examination. The pathology report should describe features relevant to care, including the depth of invasion, known as Breslow thickness, and ulceration.
These findings differ from how wide a mole looks on the skin. If a lesion has already been removed, obtain the complete report and ask whether slides or tissue blocks should be reviewed by a specialist pathologist.
Wide local excision removes additional tissue around the melanoma site. The recommended margin depends on pathological findings and the location. A sentinel lymph node biopsy may be discussed for selected patients to assess whether melanoma has reached a nearby node. It is not required for every thin melanoma.
Imaging is chosen according to the stage, symptoms and clinical findings. A scan package is not a substitute for a reasoned staging plan. For some higher-risk resected melanomas or disease that cannot be removed or has spread, systemic treatment may be considered. Options include immunotherapy and, when suitable tumor changes are present, targeted treatment. BRAF testing can inform selected decisions; it does not mean every melanoma needs the same medicine.
An oncology consultation can bring together the pathology, staging results and proposed treatment. Ask about the goal of each intervention, possible wound reconstruction, side effects and alternatives. Confirm which appointments depend on laboratory results and request a written estimate with the relevant components listed.
After treatment, the review schedule depends on stage and risk. Skin checks, advice about self-examination and sun protection remain important. Additional tests are selected when useful. Before returning home, obtain the treatment summary, wound-care instructions and a contact for new symptoms or concerns.
No. It arises from pigment-producing cells and has a different assessment and treatment pathway from common keratinocyte skin cancers.
Yes. Surface diameter alone does not establish risk. New or changing lesions deserve clinical review, even when they are small.
No. The specialist considers tumor thickness, ulceration and other findings, and explains whether the result would affect care.
Not always. Further care depends on the final pathology and stage. Some patients need additional treatment or a particular surveillance plan.
