Small intestine cancer is a broad description for several malignancies affecting the duodenum, jejunum or ileum. These include adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumours, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, or GISTs, and lymphoma. They arise from different cells and do not share one treatment pathway. Persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, bleeding or anaemia may prompt investigation, but these findings can also have non-cancerous causes.
Assessment aims to locate the problem, obtain an appropriate tissue diagnosis and determine its extent. Imaging, endoscopic procedures and laboratory tests are selected according to symptoms and the suspected tumour. The pathology may require additional tests before treatment is planned. Care can involve surgery, subtype-specific drug treatment or other measures, alongside nutritional and symptom support. Bring previous scans, endoscopy results and biopsy reports to a consultation. Ask which tumour type has been confirmed, what remains uncertain, what each treatment aims to achieve and how follow-up will be coordinated.

Adenocarcinoma starts in glandular lining cells, while neuroendocrine tumours, GIST and lymphoma have different origins. Their grading, staging investigations and drug options can differ. A treatment plan for one cannot simply be applied to another because both are located in the small intestine. Expert tissue assessment helps establish the appropriate pathway.
The clinician reviews symptoms, examination, blood tests and previous investigations. CT or MRI and selected endoscopic tests may help locate a lesion and assess possible spread. The small intestine is not fully examined by a routine gastroscopy or colonoscopy, so further tests may be needed according to the suspected location.
Capsule endoscopy can provide images in selected situations but cannot take a biopsy. It may be unsuitable when narrowing or obstruction is suspected because the capsule can become trapped. Tissue may instead be obtained during an appropriate endoscopic, image-guided or surgical procedure. Ask which test will answer the clinical question and how a sample will be collected.
A team involving gastroenterology and oncology considers pathology, disease extent, symptoms and health. Surgery can be important for resectable adenocarcinoma, with additional drug treatment considered in appropriate settings. Neuroendocrine tumour care depends on factors including grade, spread and relevant tumour characteristics.
GIST may require surgery and targeted medicines selected according to its features. Intestinal lymphoma follows a lymphoma-specific pathway, often involving systemic treatment rather than the same operation used for an adenocarcinoma. Additional molecular or other laboratory tests may clarify treatment eligibility, but testing is selected for the diagnosis rather than ordered as an identical panel for everyone.
Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked swelling or inability to pass stool or gas can indicate obstruction and need urgent local medical assessment. Do not wait for a consultation abroad. The cause may be cancer or another condition.
Discuss eating difficulties, weight changes and support from a dietitian. After surgery, nutritional needs depend on the location and amount of bowel removed. Agree who will review results, treatment effects and new symptoms. Keep operation notes and pathology summaries when moving between teams.
No. The location includes several tumour types with different care pathways.
No. A routine colonoscopy does not assess the whole small intestine. Further investigation depends on the clinical findings.
No. Pathology, extent, complications and health guide whether surgery, medicines or another approach is appropriate.
No. Suitability depends on the question and risk of narrowing. The specialist should explain its limitations and alternatives.
