Thymoma is a tumour arising from epithelial cells of the thymus, an organ behind the breastbone. It differs from thymic carcinoma and from non-cancerous thymic changes such as cysts or hyperplasia. Some thymomas remain localised, while others invade nearby structures or recur, so the diagnosis should not be treated as automatically harmless. Imaging and specialist assessment help clarify what a mass in this part of the chest represents.
Thymoma can be associated with autoimmune conditions, especially myasthenia gravis, which causes fluctuating muscle weakness. Not every person with thymoma has myasthenia, and not every person with myasthenia has a tumour. Care may involve thoracic surgery, radiotherapy or drug treatment according to pathology, extent and health. Before a consultation, gather chest scans, pathology reports and information about weakness or existing neurological treatment. Ask how tumour care and any autoimmune condition will be coordinated, which options apply and what follow-up is needed.

A mass near the thymus can represent thymoma, thymic carcinoma, a benign thymic change or another mediastinal disease. These findings require different pathways. CT, sometimes supplemented by MRI or other tests, helps assess the location and relationship to nearby structures. A scan alone does not establish every histological diagnosis.
The thoracic team decides whether tissue sampling is needed before treatment and how it should be obtained. In some situations the diagnosis is established from a surgical specimen. Pathology identifies the tumour type and provides information relevant to staging. Ask what remains uncertain and whether expert review could change the proposed plan.
Drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty chewing or swallowing and weakness that changes with activity can be features of myasthenia gravis. Report these symptoms and any known autoimmune disease before procedures or anaesthesia. A neurology assessment may be needed alongside tumour care.
Management of myasthenia and removal of a thymoma are related but separate issues. Surgery does not guarantee that weakness will resolve or that neurological medicines can be stopped. Worsening breathing or swallowing difficulty can become an emergency and requires urgent local medical help rather than waiting for a planned consultation.
A specialist oncology team considers pathology, invasion, possible spread, suitability for complete removal and general health. Surgery is often important for resectable thymoma. Radiotherapy may be considered after surgery or when surgery is not appropriate. Larger, more advanced or recurrent disease may require combined treatment, including chemotherapy in selected settings.
Thymic carcinoma has different biological features and should not automatically receive the same plan as thymoma. A minimally invasive operation is a possible approach for selected cases, not a guarantee of better cancer control. Ask about alternatives, complications and how any autoimmune condition affects treatment safety.
Thymoma can recur years after initial treatment, making an agreed long-term follow-up plan important. Monitoring may involve clinical review and selected imaging. Clarify who will oversee chest surveillance, neurological symptoms, recovery and treatment effects. Keep operation notes, pathology and treatment summaries when care involves several teams.
No. Cysts, hyperplasia and other tumours are possible. Specialist assessment determines the next steps.
No. Behaviour varies, and even a localised thymoma requires appropriate assessment and follow-up.
No. The association is important, but neither diagnosis automatically establishes the other.
Usually continued monitoring is needed. The team should explain an individual plan and which new symptoms require earlier review.
