Intrabeam is a system for delivering low-energy X-rays directly to a treatment area during surgery. In breast cancer care, it can be used to irradiate the cavity left after a tumour is removed through breast-conserving surgery. An applicator places the radiation source next to the tissues being treated while the patient is under anaesthesia. This approach is called intraoperative radiotherapy, or IORT; it differs from a course of radiation delivered externally after surgery.
For someone considering treatment abroad, the important question is whether this approach fits the cancer and the centre's clinical protocol. Intrabeam is not a routine substitute for postoperative radiotherapy for every patient. Guidelines place restrictions on its use, and final pathology may show a need for additional radiation or surgery. A consultation should cover tumour features, alternatives, recurrence risk and the plan if unexpected findings appear. Access to the equipment alone does not establish suitability. Patients also need a clear arrangement for reviewing the surgical report and continuing cancer care at home.

Intrabeam treats a limited area around the surgical cavity. For breast cancer, the team considers tumour size and biology, lymph node findings, surgical margins and other risk factors before proposing it. Whole-breast or other partial-breast radiation techniques may be alternatives. ASTRO advises against using photon IORT alone outside a clinical trial or a multi-institutional registry. NICE does not recommend routine commissioning of Intrabeam for early breast cancer. Discuss the applicable local protocol and the evidence behind the proposed plan.
After the surgeon removes the breast tumour, an applicator is positioned in the cavity. The radiation team plans and checks delivery, then irradiates the adjacent tissues before the operation is completed. The device produces X-rays rather than leaving a radioactive implant behind. The operation still involves anaesthesia, wound care and recovery; delivering radiation during it does not eliminate these stages. Ask whether treatment is intended as the only breast radiation or as part of a wider plan.
Bring biopsy results, breast imaging and previous treatment records to the consultation. The breast surgeon and radiation oncologist should review suitability together. Instructions about medicines, fasting and postoperative support depend on the planned surgery. Some findings only become clear when the removed tissue is examined. Involved margins or other unfavourable features can change treatment, including the need for further surgery or external radiotherapy. Arrange how and when the final report will be discussed before booking the return journey.
Problems can include wound infection, fluid collections, breast discomfort, delayed healing and later firmness or changes in breast appearance. Radiation and surgical risks overlap, and follow-up checks remain necessary. Increasing redness, fever, discharge or worsening pain should be reported to the team. The quotation may cover tumour surgery, anaesthesia, radiation planning and delivery, pathology and follow-up; additional treatment may be charged separately. The oncology section helps compare broader care options.
No. Final pathology and the overall cancer plan may indicate additional radiotherapy or other treatment.
No. The surgeon removes it; Intrabeam delivers radiation to the selected treatment area.
The system generates X-rays during treatment. It does not leave a radioactive source in the breast.
Discuss this with the team, including wound assessment and how any revised treatment plan will be delivered.
