Radiotherapy for breast cancer treats a planned area to reduce the risk of local recurrence or control specific disease sites. It is commonly used after breast-conserving surgery and is recommended after mastectomy in selected circumstances. The target may include the breast, chest wall, tumour bed or regional lymph nodes. The recommendation depends on the operation, tumour features, lymph node findings and treatments already received.
Whole breast treatment, partial breast irradiation and postmastectomy radiation serve different needs. A shorter course can be appropriate, but the schedule must match the individual clinical situation. Planning aims to limit exposure to the heart, lungs and other healthy tissues. Before arranging treatment abroad, ask how radiation fits with systemic therapy and any reconstruction, what side effects are expected, and who will provide skin care, rehabilitation and follow-up after returning home.

After breast-conserving surgery, radiation usually helps lower the risk of cancer returning in the treated breast. Selected lower-risk patients may discuss omission through shared decision-making. After mastectomy, the indication depends on factors such as nodal involvement, local tumour extent, margins and response to treatment given before surgery. Radiation can also relieve symptoms at specific sites of advanced disease. Local treatment does not replace systemic therapy when that is indicated.
Whole breast irradiation and partial breast treatment are different approaches. Partial treatment is suitable only for selected cases, based on pathology and clinical risk. Radiation to the chest wall and regional nodes after mastectomy has its own planning requirements. An additional dose to the tumour bed may be considered. Intraoperative radiation alone is not a routine substitute for all other breast radiation; guideline restrictions and the chance of needing further treatment should be explained.
The team uses a planning CT, surgical information and a reproducible treatment position. Deep inspiration breath hold can help reduce heart exposure in appropriate patients, particularly for left-sided treatment. It is not feasible or necessary in every plan. Discuss shoulder movement, wound healing, reconstruction and previous chest radiation. Modern shorter schedules are often used, but the exact dose and number of visits require an individual prescription. Coordinate chemotherapy, endocrine or targeted therapy with the treating specialists.
Skin changes, breast tenderness, swelling and fatigue can develop during or after treatment. Later effects may include tissue firmness, shape changes, arm swelling or shoulder stiffness. Heart and lung effects are possible despite measures to reduce exposure. Follow the team's skin care and exercise advice; persistent swelling, worsening symptoms or new breathing difficulty deserve assessment. Obtain a written follow-up plan and emergency contact. See radiotherapy and oncology care for related information.
No. The risk assessment and previous treatment determine whether chest wall and nodal radiation are useful.
Not necessarily. Appropriate shorter regimens have evidence behind them, but eligibility and dosing matter.
Yes. Radiation may affect appearance, firmness or complications, so reconstruction and radiation teams should coordinate.
External beam radiation does not make you radioactive. If another technique is proposed, ask for its specific instructions.
