Stereotactic radiosurgery uses carefully planned, focused radiation to treat a defined target in the brain. Despite its name, it does not involve cutting out tissue. It may be considered for selected brain tumours or metastases, some vascular malformations and certain cases of trigeminal neuralgia. Imaging, accurate positioning and dose planning help limit exposure to nearby structures, but treatment still carries risks.
People seek treatment abroad to obtain a specialist assessment of whether radiosurgery suits their diagnosis and to compare available planning and delivery systems. The choice should consider target size, location, previous treatment and alternatives rather than the equipment name alone. A short radiation session does not mean the entire trip or follow-up will be short: scans, planning visits and later monitoring remain necessary. Agree how images, the dose plan and clinical reviews will be shared with your doctors at home.

A specialist team may recommend stereotactic radiosurgery for selected small benign tumours, brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations or trigeminal neuralgia when suitable alternatives have been considered. The goal differs: tumour control, gradual closure of abnormal vessels or reduction of pain signals. Target volume, proximity to sensitive structures and previous radiation influence selection. A large lesion causing pressure may require another approach.
Bring MRI or CT images, pathology where available, previous treatment records and a medicines list. Report pregnancy, implants, contrast allergies and difficulty remaining still. The team reviews neurological symptoms and the indication for treatment. MRI, planning CT and sometimes vascular imaging define the target. A fitted mask or a head frame secured with pins provides positioning, depending on the system. Medicines and fasting instructions are individual.
The team calculates a dose and checks alignment before delivering radiation from multiple directions. Gamma Knife and linear accelerator systems use different equipment for this purpose. Treatment may be delivered in one session; a fractionated stereotactic course may be safer for some targets. Adults often remain awake, although support or anaesthesia may be necessary in selected circumstances. The treatment does not provide a tissue sample or immediately remove a mass.
Observation and early review assess headaches, nausea, fatigue and other symptoms. Follow the prescribed plan for steroids or seizure medicines without changing doses independently. Swelling, seizures and delayed radiation injury, including necrosis, can occur. Risks to hearing, sensation or other functions depend on the target. New weakness, speech difficulties, a seizure or a severe worsening headache need urgent assessment.
Response develops over time. Vascular malformations may retain a bleeding risk until closure is confirmed. Follow-up imaging checks control and distinguishes treatment changes from progression; a visible lesion does not automatically mean failure.
Ask who coordinates follow-up, emergency care and restrictions on driving or flying. A quotation should clarify consultations, imaging, immobilisation, planning, treatment sessions and later reviews. For tumour-related care, an oncology team also evaluates treatment outside the brain.
No. A biopsy removes tissue for diagnosis; radiosurgery delivers radiation.
No. Tumour, vessel and pain responses have different timelines and require monitoring.
No. External stereotactic radiation does not make the body radioactive.
