TrueBeam is a linear accelerator used to deliver external beam radiotherapy. It directs planned radiation doses towards a tumour or treatment area while imaging helps the team check positioning. Depending on the centre's equipment and expertise, it can support techniques such as intensity modulated radiotherapy, arc therapy and selected stereotactic treatments. TrueBeam is the name of a treatment platform, so the clinical benefit depends on the prescribed technique and individual plan.
Radiotherapy may aim to control cancer, reduce recurrence after other treatment or relieve symptoms. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, disease extent, surrounding organs and previous irradiation. Patients considering care abroad may seek a team experienced in a particular technique or in coordinating radiotherapy with surgery and medicines. Comparing centres should include planning quality, motion management where needed, management of side effects and follow-up arrangements. The machine's brand alone cannot predict treatment success or guarantee a shorter course.
Cost in partner clinics: $10000 – $20000

A radiation oncologist decides whether radiotherapy is appropriate and what it should achieve. TrueBeam can deliver different external beam techniques; stereotactic treatment is suitable only for selected situations. The location and size of the target, nearby organs and any earlier radiation help determine the plan. Ask why the proposed technique is recommended and how it compares with other options within radiotherapy.
The centre needs pathology results, relevant scans, details of previous treatment and, if previously irradiated, the original dose records and planning information. Tell the team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy and implanted electronic devices. A planning CT establishes the treatment position; additional imaging may help define the target. A mask or other support may be fitted when required.
Some plans require a particular bladder or bowel preparation, breath holding or another method of managing movement. Follow the centre's specific instructions. The team calculates the dose distribution and checks the plan before treatment; simply arriving with a diagnosis does not allow immediate irradiation.
Radiographers position the patient and use imaging to compare anatomy with the plan. The treatment couch or machine may move around the patient. Staff leave the room during beam delivery but continue observing and communicating through an intercom. The radiation itself is not felt. Report discomfort or difficulty maintaining the position so staff can assess the problem. The number of sessions and overall schedule are individually prescribed.
Fatigue and skin changes can occur. Other effects depend on the treated area and may involve swallowing, digestion, bladder function, fertility or nearby organs. Some effects develop later or persist; precise targeting does not remove all risks. Follow the team's care instructions and report new or worsening symptoms. External beam treatment does not make the patient radioactive. Agree how response and delayed effects will be assessed after returning home.
Costs depend on consultation, planning scans, immobilisation, the technique, number of sessions and associated treatment. Include accommodation and transport in travel planning. Transferring between centres may require a new plan even when both use TrueBeam, so changes and interruptions need coordination.
No. A TrueBeam linear accelerator and a proton treatment system are different technologies.
Positioning images primarily guide accurate delivery; response assessment has a separate schedule.
No. The prescription depends on the diagnosis, goal and safe dose limits.
